School admissions to be finalised by October

The Gauteng education department will no longer process school admission applications at the beginning of the year. With over 84000 Grade 1s and 61397 Grade 8s placed so far, the department intends to place all pupils for the 2016 academic year by October. The department processed just over 20000 late applications in January this year.Spokesman Phumla Sekhonyane said the 11446 applications made through the online application system launched in April this year showed that the system was "well received". The online application system provided the department with a centralised database, which will be used for planning purposes, Sekhonyane added.KwaZulu-Natal education spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said that the department would complete its admissions process at the end of October, and "deal with problems encountered" thereafter.Districts in the Northern Cape approved admission recommendations submitted by schools on Friday. The provincial department was confident in its supply of schools in the 2016 academic year."The only exception," said spokesman Sydney Stander, "would be a school experiencing pressure as a result of preference of parents. In such cases we will continue to advise parents to go to the schools which have space."However, the department of education in the Western Cape estimates it will need to build a total of 22 schools a year to meet the demand for schooling in the province, considering the average 22000 annual influx of pupils.The education department had had to accommodate 154891 pupils who had flocked to Western Cape from other provinces and countries between 2010 and 2015.Education spokesman Jessica Shelver, however, said the department had developed a "comprehensive" school infrastructure plan for the province to meet demands in the short and long term, including using existing accommodation, building additional classrooms and building new schools...
