Service providers take Telkom to court

Public utility Telkom plans to vigorously defend its decision to extend its net beyond service providers it has contracts with. Thirteen contractors have approached the Pretoria High Court to interdict Telkom from appointing any service provider outside the 22 registered with the entity.The companies want Telkom to give them preference when it needs service providers on, among other things, OSP services, customer fulfilment and assurance services, ISP services and DC power services.But Telkom spokesman Jacqui O'Sullivan said the agreement concluded with the 22 service providers is not an exclusive agreement. "It is also a noncommittal agreement. In other words, there is no commitment by Telkom that it will be confined to providing orders only to the 22 service providers."She said Telkom regarded the application by the companies as an attempt to interfere with the management of its contractors."The application is aimed at favouring one group of contractors ahead of other contractors, which were duly and properly appointed in terms of various procedure," she said...
