Just Dandy: Who's a pretty boy, then?

27 August 2015 - 02:08 By Sylvia McKeown

Lucky Blue Smith, the so-called Justin Bieber of modelling, is the latest pretty young thing to use Instagram to further his career on the runway. ''I don't know if any famous people follow me," Smith mused on his account. ''But their daughters definitely do."The 16-year-old was discovered at the age of 12 when a scout came to small-town Utah to sign his sisters - Pyper America, 18, Daisy Clementine, 19, and Queen Starlie, 21, - but he has only recently grabbed the world's attention. As the number of followers on his Instagram account grows so do the job offers from labels such as Tom Ford, Bottega Veneta, CK one and Fendi, and he was invited onto Ellen Degeneres'talk show. The latest issue of former Paris Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book features Smith - who has been described as the "Mormon male model-of-the-moment" - alongside Lady Gaga. For the inaugural issue of CR Men's Book, Smith, the star of Moncler's brilliant ice explorer campaign, was shot close up so that only the collar of his aviator jacket and one of his luminous grey eyes weren't obscured. As part of the ridiculously photogenic Smith family (the four siblings are all represented by Next Models and starred together in a Gap campaign), Lucky Blue has featured on the cover of Harper's Bazaar China with Pyper America and plays the drums in their family band, The Atomics.Modelling agencies are clamouring to get Smith onto the runway. His chiselled face and swagger are half the reason, but so is the added media outreach of 1.3million young fans; a bunch of whom show up screaming in adoration when Smith posts the location of the shows on Instagram.Because of the recent focus on men's fashion around the world, male models are garnering a lot of attention.Locally, Brett (Brr) Rogers is the closest thing we have to Smith. He's worked for Pringle and Bonafide Beard, and has strutted his stuff on local catwalks, and in Dubai and Turkey. But he has only 3273 Instagram followers to date. His bearded face features frequently on the local scene and he's created his own clothing label, Half Wolf. He has his own podcast, The Balcony Sessions, and a reality TV food show, Food, Booze and Tattoos, in which he travels around South Africa looking for interesting things to nibble, drink and ink. Lucky Blue Smith is @luckybsmith and Brett Rogers @brrrogers on Instagram..
