Bid to defuse varsity violence
Amid rising political tensions and violence as student representative councils campaign for elections, the Department of Higher Education has said it will hold a series of workshops to create greater tolerance. Last week, a skirmish broke out between members of the SA Student Congress and the EFF at Tshwane University of Technology.The workshops will be held at 26 universities around the country.Department of Higher Education spokesman Khaye Nkwanyana said: "We have put together experienced people to train the students to become better leaders in their different institutions and even beyond their tenure."The two-month training will assist the student leadership to better understand their responsibilities and roles."We are confident that at the end of the programme they will be better leaders."Elections were held at TUT and Wits at the weekend, with results due to be released this week.
