Bar Code: Two Oblivions are poles apart

02 September 2015 - 02:05 By Andrew Donaldson

Evidence of a less salubrious age presents itself within moments of entering this warm and welcoming wine bar. There in the corner of the burnished, woody interior of Oblivion's large ante-room is a strip dancer's pole, and the heart sinks a little. Do women still do this abattoirish business of grinding away like extras in The Sopranos? Here in the southern suburbs?Apparently not. Oblivion is many things to its regulars, but it is not a strip club. It can be a quiet family-type establishment for those seeking a Sunday lunch. At the other end of the spectrum, on weekend nights, it is a heaving, pumping nightclub jammed with bright young things off their faces. That pole does, however, see a bit of action. Among the functions Oblivion caters for are stag nights. "Test your agility and strength after a few of our house shooters," its website suggests, "by climbing our stripper pole while singing along to all your favourite songs on our dance floor."Thanks, but if it's all the same to you we're more than happy in a quiet corner close to one of the fires, working our way through the wine list. There's an impressive open-air roof deck which is a drawcard in warmer months, but upstairs or down, there's plenty of space to chill out. They get goody points, also, for the free Wi-Fi and the large leather sofas - although, regarding the latter, during one of our visits a couple of gym bunny types, horizontal and in their cups, had to be told by management to sit properly. This, we believe, was a euphemism for "get a room".22 Chichester Road, Harfield Village (corner Third Avenue).
