Deli Delight: A slice of th Big Apple

02 September 2015 - 02:05 By Alexander Matthews

Even though I wouldn't want to live there, some days I miss New York, its energy, noise, culture. Perhaps most of all, I miss its food. On a recent visit, my favourite spot was the café recently opened by Russ & Daughters, a Jewish deli on the Lower East Side . What a classy joint. Propped up at the marble-topped bar, I tucked into scrambled eggs with lox and onion on rye, and pastrami-cured salmon on a pretzel.Luckily, for days when I'm missing New York in general, and Russ & Daughters in particular, there is Kleinsky's.On bustling Regent Road in Sea Point, this cosy white-walled space is a little piece of New York deli delightfulness, offering homage to the Big Apple's hearty Jewish fare. There are plenty of breakfast options - eggs Benedict on potato latkes, for example, or a fry up (lamb bacon, fried egg, cheddar, tomato) crammed inside a bagel. For brunch, I tried the yummy California bagel, which is smeared with wasabi cream cheese, topped with salmon and avo, and zinged up with a ginger and soya dressing. If there is one thing it would be criminal not to order, it's the Reuben. This sandwich combines Kleinsky's standout warm pastrami beef with melting Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and a Russian dressing on toasted rye. Creamy, meaty and with a hint of tart, it's everything you could wish for in a lunch.Kleinskys.co.za, 021-433-2871..
