Full Nests: Sharing is caring

02 September 2015 - 02:06 By Eleanor Doughty

When Belinda Gallop-Iliffe and her husband James's five teenagers moved from their lively, busy home something was immediately missing. The house, Belinda says, felt different. "We were rattling around in the large, lovely home that we had created for our family, and it was quiet and empty."The solution was to try Airbnb, the company that epitomises the sharing economy - the ultimate in 2015's trend of sharing for all, in which you can let out sections of your house for others to rent like hotel rooms."I figured if it didn't work, I could always stop," she says. "But I love it!"She's not alone. Last year 10million people worldwide stayed in an Airbnb residence. The app is popular in South Africa. Both Cape Town and Johannesburg have more than 1000 listings to choose from' while Durban has a couple of hundred. There are even places to stay outside the major cities in places like Kimberley, Haartbeespoort and Magaliesburg showing a growing number of listings.Perhaps the most fascinating trend in the growing popularity of the app is its use by people over 60. According to new figures, the number of hosts in that age group has more than quadrupled as more and more retirement-age citizens share their homes to supplement their income and stay connected. "The affirmation of having happy guests is enormous," says Gallop-Iliffe.Additional reporting by Yolisa Mkele and ©The Daily Telegraph..
