On the tube: For those who like their TV a little depraved

I hate The Bachelor. The show represents everything that's wrong with reality TV and everything that's wrong with gender dynamics. A bunch of women who fit the mould for what TV producers and magazine editors tell us is "hot", who are also desperately single and usually "crazy" compete for the affections of one man who looks a bit like a Ken doll and is usually a jerk. Lovely. All the gender stereotypes are played up and it's infuriating to witness - and although the man is the one kissing on many women, the women are the ones who are accused of being "loose" and "slutty".But lately, I have been hooked on The Bachelor. Well, not quite. The show I've been watching is actually called Everlasting, and it has the same plot line as The Bachelor. Everlasting is a fictional reality TV show as depicted on Lifetime's crazy and dramatic series, UnReal. The show stars Shiri Appleby, she of early 2000s Roswell fame. Appleby plays Rachel, a TV producer on a dating reality show who looks really cute and harmless but actually, she's the devil's deputy. Like the other producers on the show, her job is to stir up shit and create drama.Their modus operandi? Befriend contestants, get under their skin and manipulate them into doing some messed up things all in the name of good television. If the contestants don't take the bait, it's okay - there's nothing like some clever editing to make a grieving woman look like she's gone batshit crazy for absolutely no reason. The real devil behind Everlasting is Rachel's boss, Quinn, a tanned and toned bob-rocking brunette with the heart of a Death Eater. Quinn is played by Constance Zimmer (from House of Cards). She does not give a damn what needs to be done to get good TV, human collateral or not. It's quite twisted, but apparently it's not so far-fetched: UnReal is co-written by a former producer of The Bachelor. The whole idea of UnReal is to give us a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes drama on one of the most dramatic reality shows on television. But the drama is not only limited to the contestants: the people behind the show have personal scandals even worse than those on the show they produce and amp up.UnReal is a thrilling, entertaining and disturbing show perfect for those who like their TV a bit depraved and very, very dramatic.UnReal is on Lifetime, Saturdays at 9.35pm..
