Straight outta Newtown

16 September 2015 - 02:06 By Leonie Wagner

The days when people partied only over the weekend are gone. Those looking to ease their way into the party season can head to Newtown tonight for a DJ battle.Carfax will host a musical showcase that sees six top DJs vie for the title of MTV DJ Battle Master. The DJs will compete against each other in three challenges.Television music authorities MTV and MTV Base have roped in DJ Zinhle, DJ C'ndo, DJ Shimza, Khenzero, DJ Tira and Vigilante. They will be competing in two teams of three, Team MTV and Team MTV Base. The competition will also feature a "wild card" challenge and at the end of each battle round the audience will select a winner.Dillon Khan, the MTV channel director, said one of the challenges would include the DJs playing songs according to a chosen theme. This means that if the theme is "money", partygoers could be twerking to a mash-up of Notorious BIG's Mo Money, Mo Problems and Wu Tang's C.R.E.A.M.Khan said: "We wanted to do an event for our audiences where everyone is at the 'church' of music with the DJs at the pulpit giving us a musical sermon."The six DJs on the list may not have "DJ Black Coffee" clout but they are well worth their weight in DJ gold.Black Coffee is to South African DJs what Trevor Noah is to comedians. He is arguably South Africa's top DJ, having just released an album; he will also be heading to the world's premium party destination, Ibiza, later this month for the DJ Awards...
