Cafe Racers: The torque of the town

17 September 2015 - 02:11 By Siphiliselwe Makhanya

Cafe racer culture is alive and well in South Africa and motorbikes are being customised by enthusiasts all over the country. Two such enthusiasts are Kyle Scott and Chris Clokie, who build the kinds of bikes they would love to own - beautifully formed and reliably functional. The friends and motorcycling geeks are the co-owners of Wolf Moto, a custom bike shop in Drummond, Inchanga, KwaZulu-Natal."We build international-quality custom bikes that we, ourselves, would want to ride," said Scott."We're a full-service motorcycle workshop, building not only custom motorcycles but also fabricating our own custom stainless steel exhaust systems and specialising in building motorcycle suspensions."The team of two make most of the parts themselves. Brackets, mountings, wheel-sets - all are built from scratch."We also build and shape all our custom motorcycle seats; specialise in building motorcycle suspensions; and weld all our own custom stainless steel exhaust systems and sub-frames."What they cannot build themselves - such as antigravity lithium-ion batteries and some branded accessories - they import from countries such as Germany and the US.Specialised tank painting, powder coating and leather upholstery are the only things they subcontract. The motorcycles take about three months each to build and sell for about R30000.Though they have adjusted to parting with their creations, the makers admit to having personal favourites. Clokie, a former mechanic who comes from a racing family, favours the Suzuki DRZ ''Feel Good 400"."I have had the pleasure of working on many Motard race bikes and in my opinion they are pretty much the most fun you can have on two wheels."Scott has been riding off-road bikes for most of his life and has a background in motorcycle sales and marketing. He has a soft spot for the Triumph Street Triple 675 Cafe Racer."I'm somewhat biased towards this bike because it used to belong to me - and the new owner did the bike-build justice by ordering good quality imported components. It has the all the go to match the show."Wolf Moto's customers represent a variety of generations, said Clokie."Our customers over the past year have ranged from retired guys looking for a fun custom bike to add to their collection to young professionals who can afford to have a bespoke bike built for themselves."They also do a lot of general motorcycle maintenance and repair work on road-going and off-road motorbikes. We get to meet all types of motorcycle fanatic."Scott and Clokie can be contacted on 083-778-7713 and 078-642-9763, or by e-mail at thepack@wolfmoto.cc ..
