SA man braais for the beloved country

Durban's Masood Boomgaard has cooked his way into the history books - he now holds the record for the world's longest braai marathon. The trial by fire began at 5.30pm on Heritage Day and finished 81 hours later at 2.30am yesterday, breaking the 80-hour record set last year in Georgia in the US, by South African Jan Greeff.According to the Guinness World Record rules, there had to be a minimum of five types of meat on the fire at all times; the entire process had to be filmed with auditors present throughout. None of the meat was burned, but there were a couple of heated moments."The first one was during a comfort break. The camera automatically switched off and we didn't realise," said organiser Yaseen Khan. "Luckily, the auditors noted this and logged it. Otherwise the entire exercise would have been in vain."Boomgaard also struggled when a strong wind threatened to lift the gazebo under which he was braaiing."We had to weigh it down with bags of charcoal and tie it to whatever was available. It was a MacGyver moment."The rules also limited Boomgaard's breaks to five minutes an hour, which he could accumulate. On his first break on Friday he rushed home, showered, went to mosque, and returned.Boomgaard, whose final flame- grilled meat was a piece of biltong, said the marathon was harder than the Comrades. "It's not something you can train for - it's all about your mental state, and never-ending hand eye co-ordination. I have got braaiing down to a fine art - no one can top me - but I think I'm now done."..
