Taxi drivers and commuters wounded in turf war

Drivers from rival taxi associations battled it out on the streets of Centurion, Pretoria, yesterday. About 20 taxis were damaged and 15 taxi drivers injured.Members of the Centurion Taxi Association (CTA) and the Tembisa Alexandra Taxi Association (TATA) pelted each other with stones at the Centurion rank. Several passengers were allegedly dragged out of taxis and severely assaulted, with one allegedly beaten with a golf club.Shots were fired and two drivers were allegedly taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.A taxi driver belonging to CTA said he had had to hide in the Centurion Mall for hours as members of TATA hunted them down."They arrived in several cars in the morning and shot and injured two of our drivers. From then they drove around assaulting passengers for taking our taxis," he said.In the morning paramedics treated a severely assaulted passenger found in a veld near the intersection of Nellmapius Drive and Main Road in Irene. They took him to hospital.ER24 spokesman Chitra Bodasing said the man, in his 40s, had sustained severe injuries and two other severely injured passengers were treated by paramedics from other emergency services.Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said they were investigating cases of assault, malicious damage to property and attempted murder.
