Our films shine on festival screens

The South African movie industry is garnering international attention. For Love and Broken Bones has won the main award at the Portland Film Festival and has been selected for screening at the New York City Independent Film Festival later this month.At the same time, Ayanda is screening at a slew of international film festivals.Directed by Sara Blecher, it is currently being screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival, and from October 7 to 18 will show at Britain's leading film event, the BFI London Film Festival. It then moves to the Cambridge African Film Festival.It had its world premier at the LA Film Festival earlier this year, winning the special jury prize; it also screened at the Cannes Film Festival.Co-produced by actress and producer Terry Pheto, of Tsotsi fame, the film tells of Ayanda's struggle to keep the memory of her Nigerian father alive, and to prove to her mother and uncle that she can make the family business financially viable. Ayanda opens nationwide on October 2.For Love and Broken Bones tells the story of a hardened debt collector who falls in love with his latest assignment, a passionate wedding planner.Directed by Tebogo Malope, it stars Lerato Mvelase (Home Affairs, Thola) and Mduduzi Mabaso (Rhythm City, Hotel Rwanda, Blood Diamond).The film was commissioned by Mzansi Magic.Producer Desiree Markgraaff said: "We are so delighted that For Love and Broken Bones has been recognised. All credit to Tebogo, who really poured his heart and soul into this ... stunning debut."..
