Room with dog bowl a bit rich

Perhaps it's the wide choice of pillows and duvets. Or maybe it's the French champagne at breakfast. Whatever it is, uber-rich people love South Africa's luxury hotels, particularly those in Durban and Cape Town.According to the latest rating of luxury hotels, released by New World Wealth, the world's multimillionaires prefer to rest their weary heads at Durban and Cape Town's five-star establishments.The Johannesburg "wealth intelligence" company asked 800 multimillionaires to rate their favourite hotels.The world-famous Plaza Hotel in New York topped the list of the 10 best hotels globally, followed by the Bellagio in Las Vegas.When it came to Africa, Cape Town's Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, and the Cape Grace, featured in the top 10, as did the Oyster Box Hotel at Umhlanga, near Durban."Cape Town hotels appear to be the most luxurious," said Andrew Amoils, New World Wealth's head of research."Our ratings focus on the preferences of the super-rich so luxuriousness would be a big factor."Twelve Apostles' "thoughtful extras", such as its duvet and pillow menu, complimentary wine tastings, heli-stop and 16-seat cinema have won Brownie points with wealthy guests.In addition, pooches and felines are welcome guests, and are catered for with pet beds in some rooms. Doggie bowls and pet food menus are extras.The Oyster Box, too, offers a pillow menu - and French champagne and oysters for breakfast.And, instead of just a pen and notepad, a full stationery pack is provided in the rooms.Every room has a DVD player with an extensive DVD library, a beach bag, beach towel and umbrellas, and two phone lines.Oyster Box general manager Wayne Coetzer was not surprised that the hotel made the top 10."When you step into the Oyster Box, you feel the history in the walls," he said.A couple of Joburg business hotels - the Michelangelo and the Sandton Sun - just missed out on being in the top 10, said Amoils.About 32000 multimillionaires visited Africa in the 12 months to June."South Africa was the most popular African destination for the super-rich, with more than 12000 multimillionaires visiting us during the period."The most popular destinations in South Africa were Cape Town, Johannesburg, Umhlanga, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Kruger Park and the Knysna area.Africa's top ten1.
