SA exhibits bad case of phone love

As the early morning sun filters in and they wipe the sleep from their eyes, 56% of South Africans gaze lovingly at their cellphones. That's one of the findings in a recent survey by smart device repair store iFix, which found 68% of South Africans look at their phones more often than they do at their partners.About a third of respondents also admitted they would miss their phone more than their partners and two-thirds admitted to being addicted to their phones.The findings were attributed to FOBO (Fear Of Being Offline) and PSA (Phone Separation Anxiety).It did not come as a surprise then that 48% would rather socialise on their phones than at someone's house, or going to a restaurant or bar (22%).And while they may be in the minority, 13% said they spend a whopping 10 or more hours a day on their phone.The survey was conducted throughout Cape Town and online over three weeks.So far 1760 South Africans have been surveyed.Youngsters dominated the polls, with 44% coming from the 16-25 age group and 33% aged 26-35.Innovation expert Toby Shapshak said he was not surprised by the findings."People are absorbed by cellphones. Facebook is the first thing people check in the morning and the last thing they check at night," Shapshak said...
