Students take feisty Manamela to task

Buti Manamela, deputy minister in The Presidency, was yesterday taken to task by students who demanded that government "talk shows" be replaced by real action. This was after the incoming Wits University student leaders were denied entry to the workshop because they were chanting outside the hall. Manamela described the singing as "terrible"."We are highly offended that we are being told our singing is bad instead of asking exactly why we were singing outside. We are not here to allow you guys [Manamela and representatives of the Department of Higher Education and Training] to continue to have these talk shows with us. We are here to have robust discussions and you must note that the institutions belong to students, not to management, not to the department of whatever it may be," said Nompendulo Mkatshwa, incoming president of Wits Students' Representative Council.She said the problems being faced by universities all over the country, particularly those involving fees, would be dealt with by the new SRC, the leaders of which wanted resolute engagements with the university's management and the department about academic and financial exclusions.Manamela earlier said: "If we do not shout the loudest to the minister of higher education and the president . no one will hear us."Disgruntled student representatives said they were tired of empty promises about student funding and fees.Representatives of the SA Union of Students, a national body at institutions of higher education, said higher education required a new type of student leadership throughout the country...
