ANC boots Boland leader for hiding criminal past

An ANC leader in the Western Cape was fired yesterday for failing to disclose his criminal record to the party. Boland regional secretary Jonton Snyman was found guilty at an internal hearing, which he failed to attend, of bringing the party into disrepute.Boland is the second-biggest region in the Western Cape, including municipalities such as Stellenbosch and Drakenstein.Khaya Magaxa, chairman of the party's disciplinary committee in the province, said Snyman pleaded guilty at the Worcester Magistrate's Court to fraud, theft of money, corruption, money laundering and racketeering.He was found guilty of submitting a fraudulent insurance claim for his laptop computer and sentenced to six months in prison, which was suspended for five years. He was also fined R3000.Snyman was charged by the ANC for failing to declare this conviction when he ran for the Boland position this year.His expulsion coincides with calls by the ANC for strong action to be taken against people who embarrass the party.He will lose the salary the party pays him, believed to be about R800 000 a year...
