WP 'will not repeat mistakes' against Bulls

14 October 2015 - 02:03 By Khanyiso Tshwaku

Western Province coach John Dobson says that the mistakes his teams made in their last two visits to the Highveld will not be repeated in their Currie Cup semifinal against the Blue Bulls on Friday evening. Western Province's trips to Johannesburg and Pretoria have been less than profitable, with 62-32 and 47-29 defeats by the Golden Lions and the Bulls. While the hammering in Joburg was a result of a weak defence that the Lions bashed until it collapsed, the loss to the Bulls exposed breakdown and kick-chase weaknesses."We've had two poor games up there," said Dobson. "Defensively and from a breakdown perspective, we were nowhere in that Loftus game and you could see from the first five minutes that we missed obvious clean-outs and tackles."I don't know what the cause of those mistakes was, but I'm convinced that it's not going to happen this weekend."If we're prepared to run down and chase kicks when we're tired, that will determine this game."Dobson has made eight changes to the side that cakewalked past Eastern Province Kings on Friday evening. But the only changes from the side that was blasted by the Bulls on August 22 are Robert du Preez starting at flyhalf with Demetri Catrakilis having left WP, while Oli Kebble is on the bench with Wilco Louw packing alongside Bongi Mbonambi and Steven Kitshoff. Livewire loose-forward Chris Cloete was also missing from that match, while there will be the grunt of Rynhardt Elstadt at openside flank.Whether it is a good idea to go to Pretoria without a fetcher remains to be seen, especially with Nollis Marais's penchant for picking two fetchers who double as decent ball-carrying options...
