ANC: Motlanthe has a point on party losing its way

The ANC has uncharacteristically accepted scathing criticism of the ruling party. In a conciliatory statement yesterday, spokesman Zizi Kodwa accepted as "pertinent" comments former president Kgalema Motlanthe made to Business Day. Motlanthe said he turned down a place on the party's national executive committee because some members would be prone to acting against the constitution. He said: "The point I am making is that the policies are in place, the constitution is in place, but if those in power can pick and choose when to adhere, when not to adhere then we have a very difficult situation. I was clear that if I continued serving in that leadership it would be a constant battle just to get them to operate on the basis of the constitution."Kodwa hailed Motlanthe as "a voice of reason who has always been at the forefront of raising pertinent and thought-provoking questions within the structures of the ANC".He added: "He remains a critical opinion maker on how we as the ANC should confront internal challenges on matters that if unattended could materialise as future problems."..
