World-renowned director Steven Spielberg chats about the Cold War thriller 'Bridge of spies' What in the story appealed to you?In the 1960s I had a tremendous amount of awareness of what was happening during the Cold War. Plus I love spy movies. I love John le Carré, the James Bond movies, Mad magazine and Don Martin's infamous Spy vs Spy column, so spying has always been on my mind.Do you have any memories of the Cold War as a kid?I was aware of the feeling of being on the brink of nuclear holocaust. I actually filled up the bathtubs with water because I assumed that if there was a war all the water would be cut off and we'd have to drink from the bathtubs.What does this story mean to you?People make snap judgments about situations in their communities and in the world and need to see them as having a good side and a bad side. We give all our empathy to the hero, and no credit or currency to the villain. It's not easy to root for someone who's a spy against the security of our nation. how could we possibly care about this person? But in this case we do.Filming in Berlin?We shot at the Berlin Wall, which was really symbolic. The walls were actually easy to scale, you just didn't dare do it. When we shot those scenes I looked at the wall and thought to myself, "Did this really happen? Was Berlin really divided like this?" It brought back a time in my life when walls started to go up all over the world, most of them invisible...
