Noisy start to ANC conference anticipated

The KwaZulu-Natal ANC's eighth provincial conference is expected to nominate and elect its top five officials today, amid appeals to rowdy delegates to remain disciplined and to avoid shouting slogans that would insult the leadership of the party. Laying down the law yesterday, party officials warned that those attending with the intention of disrupting the conference would "not be tolerated".Talking to the media about conference preparations, secretary Sihle Zikalala stressed that the elective provincial conference was not to be seen as a mirror of what might happen in 2017."We are still years away from the 2017 conference."We will not be discussing that subject at all, not even in our corners or at football matches, where we gather," he said.The closely contested conference will be attended by about 1300 delegates nominated by their branches. Zikalala said all top five positions - chairman, deputy chairman, secretary, deputy secretary and treasurer - would be dealt with this afternoon and the results could be out tomorrow.Zikalala said the additional-membership process would start tomorrow. Zikalala is challenging incumbent chairman Senzo Mchunu for the position. It is the first time Mchunu will face off against his protégé. Neither man has ever lost in internal elections before. Zikalala will not discuss what might happen should he or Mchunu lose...
