Bar Code: Anyone for a spot of elevenses?

11 November 2015 - 03:21 By Andrew Donaldson

Today being the 11th day of the 11th month, why not be at Harald's Bar & Terrace, on the 11th floor of the Park Inn, when it opens for business at the 11th hour? It was at this very moment, in 1918, that the armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed at Compiègne in France, ending World War 1.It's a rooftop bar, and the views are spectacular, but if you look down onto the street, towards your left, you will notice the cenotaph. (Hint: look for the wreaths.) First unveiled in 1924 to commemorate South Africans who died in that conflict, it also commemorates soldiers who subsequently fell in World War 2 and the Korean War. Silently raise a glass, then, in salute. Were it not for their sacrifice, well, we'd have a bunch of different statues about the place.Harald's is also good for less solemn occasions. Now that summer threatens, it's a chic spot to hang out after work while the traffic dies down. The cocktail menu is fairly extensive and includes all the classics - margaritas, Long Island iced tea, strawberry daiquiris - plus a bunch of stuff we'd like to get to know better, like the kiwi and cucumber Pimms punch and the rummy spiced apple crush.Should things get a bit too hot - maybe on Fridays, when a DJ throws some chill beats into the mix - one could splash about in the plunge pool in the corner.Oh, and people have been known to abseil down the side of the hotel from the bar. But this is silly as the lifts are perfectly usable.Park Inn by Radisson,29 Heerengracht, Foreshore, 021-427-4800, 11am to 11pm daily..
