'Broke' airline's plane grounded

Skywise, South Africa's troubled low-cost airline, has had its only plane grounded in Johannesburg, allegedly because of financial woes. A new plane was leased and flights are operating as usual. Vernon Bricknell, who owns the grounded 737-500 plane, said last night he had had problems getting paid by the group "from day one".''I've had enough,'' he said, adding he was still owed "a lot of money". He did not elaborate.Skywise interim CEO Tabassum Qadir denied missing "even one payment". Irfan Pardesi, who was appointed CEO on August 11, resigned on Friday. Claims that his co-CEO, Johan Borstlap, had also resigned were denied by Qadir.Bricknell is not the first to complain about late or non-payment.Peter Annear, CEO of Star Air Cargo, which also leased a plane to the company until last month, said "it was tough getting paid".Bricknell was scathing about the group's ability to operate an airline. ''It amazes me the [Civil Aviation Authority] gave them a licence. They know nothing.''Bracknell said he had to ''run around getting them a spare tyre'' recently. They had not been aware the entire wheel needed to be overhauled before it was replaced.Qadir denied this, saying: ''These are merely allegations. We have a well-experienced team under Johan Borstlap, and Skywise would never compromise on safety .''Last night she asked: "How can you listen to [Bricknell]? Everybody knows this man." In a later e-mail she said: ''I'm surprised you're relying on operational aviation information from the ex-CEO of the now-defunct Nationwide?''..
