Premier asked to apply mind to monkey matter

A KwaZulu-Natal couple want Premier Senzo Mchunu to allow them to move 200 rescued monkeys from their Westville home to a proposed sanctuary. The Durban High Court on Friday ordered Monkey Helpline founders Carol Booth and Steve Smit to remove the animals from their home within six months."Monkey Helpline is now relying on the premier to apply his mind to the problems facing Monkey Helpline specifically, and monkeys generally, and for him to grant a special consent to Monkey Helpline which will force Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife to issue the registration and permits that will allow the legal transfer of monkeys from Monkey Helpline's Westville base to its Camperdown facility," Smit said.In court papers, the eThekwini Municipality said Booth and Smit had violated zoning regulations by running a monkey rehabilitation and sanctuary without council consent.The municipality claimed that they were running a zoo and veterinary clinic, which resulted in neighbours complaining about excessive noise, flies and unpleasant odours."We emphatically deny all claims that we operate either a zoo or a veterinary clinic at our Westville facility," Smit said...
