Premier orders new corruption probe

Allegations of maladministration and misconduct in the Gauteng department of sports, arts, culture and recreation are to be investigated on the orders of Premier David Makhura. "Premier Makhura views the allegations made against the department very seriously and has accordingly instructed the MEC for finance and e-government, Barbara Creecy, to institute a forensic investigation."Acting on the premier's instruction, the Gauteng treasury has appointed an independent forensic team to investigate allegations of misconduct at the department," said Gauteng government spokesman Thabo Masebe.Masebe said the team would investigate allegations of financial mismanagement, breach of regulations and human resources procedures, and fraud and corruption.A preliminary report was expected by the middle of next month."Since the allegations include the role and conduct of the former MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation, who is currently MEC for social development, Ms Molebatsi Bopape, the premier has also referred the matter to the integrity commissioner," Masebe said.The allegations were made by officials of the department and by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union...
