Delicious Monsters: Really, truly great shakes

25 November 2015 - 02:24 By Nivashni Nair

The sigh of pleasure that escaped my satisfied mouth at a little café in Pietermaritzburg had me in the starring role of my very own #foodporn episode. You see, it was a case of size does matter when it comes to the arousal of my taste buds. The seduction began on Instagram where the Freakshake, an over-the-top, messy milkshake created in a small café in Australia, gained instant fame.I have never wanted a milkshake as badly as I wanted the one in the pictures. My search for a local offering of a milkshake that could curl my toes led me to Flavour Café in Pietermaritzburg.Hidden in the Dunrobin Nursery, Flavour Café offers a comprehensive breakfast, lunch and tea menu in a trendy setting. But its version of the Freakshake - a caramel shake with doughnut, speckled eggs, chocolate cigars, peanut butter and condensed milk cheesecake; or a salted caramel shake with popcorn, peanut butter, condensed milk cheesecake and candy floss; and even a pretzel and home-made butterscotch shake - is the drawcard. When my oversized jar of milkshake, topped with vanilla seed chocolate swirl ice cream and chocolate brownies arrived, I could see why the café went through more than 125 litres of ice-cream last week. All milkshake jars are dunked in home-made ganache so delectable that I hardly had to venture inside the frosted glass to satisfy my sweet craving.Owner Lee Hankey informed me that it's not a flavourshake if it's not dripping down the outside. In any other setting, I would have shied away from devouring a monster messy milkshake but playing children, laughter from a birthday luncheon, grown men sipping on carnival flavoured shakes, and a blanket to keep the Midlands chill away sucked me into the laid-back ambience. The meals, such as the gourmet chicken burger with onion rings and potato wedges, keep you there to enjoy a slow, more than satisfying, dining experience.Need to knowWhen to go: Breakfast and lunch on Tuesdays to Sundays from 8am to 4.30pm.Who to take: Everyone but friends on diet. What to drink: Flavour shakes, of course!Whatever you do: Take a photo and Instagram it.How much do you need: Shakes are from R38 to R45.
