Deal with illegal guns first

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko states the obvious that "guns were used in serious crimes", but he is targeting the wrong people by overhauling licensing procedures ('Minister guns for firearms legislation', November 23). He blames a loophole in the act that allows an individual to possess 5000 firearms for sport. That's some sportsman! Maybe a licensed collector? If there is a problem associated with "sporting purposes" then surely it rests with the legislating authority. The article refers to the Central Firearms Registry being in a shambles for years and that ammunition can be bought without any control of the quantity. There is reference to a society with violent tendencies, but not all of society reflects this - I dare query, could it be criminals that are responsible for this?Gun Free SA's Adele Kirsten feels it is mistakenly assumed illegal guns are at the centre of the problem, when it is the legally sourced ones. Are there stats to prove that licensed owners use their firearms in criminal instances or are these stolen guns supplied by the black market? There is a saying that "if a conservative doesn't like a TV show, he switches channels. Liberals demand what they don't like be shut down."The licensing authority asks numerous questions to establish if one is fit to possess a firearm and for what purpose. The registry must get its house in order to issue and monitor the control of weapons. ..
