The Proteas returned from their troubled tour of India on Tuesday and, upon arrival, confirmed that fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander will both miss the Boxing Day Test against England. Philander will actually miss the first two Tests and only has an outside chance of playing in the third, which starts at the Wanderers on January 14.Steyn is struggling with a groin strain and Philander has ankle ligament upheaval.Though Steyn will undergo a fitness test in a week's time, the squad will be announced on Thursday or on Friday.Coach Russell Domingo said it was a priority to get a fit bowling line-up against England, before conceding that the side is "still grappling with the opening partnership". Batting depth is also a concern for the coach.Asked if there would be significant squad changes, he said: "I'm hoping not vastly different . It might just be one or two players. I'd hate us to panic because we have some quality players in that side."You've got to be fair and guys have to perform, but, particularly for the batting unit, [those were] very extreme conditions."But he added: "There is a lot of work to be done with the Test team. Let's not be naïve about that."As part of remedial action, Domingo has to strike a balance between resting players, while giving others the opportunity to search for form in the Sunfoil Series."The bowlers won't play. Morné Morkel has to be managed. Stiaan van Zyl, Temba Bavuma, Simon Harmer, Dane Piedt and Marchant de Lange will play," he said..
