A South African alleged rapist who has been on the run for seven years was arrested in a Belgian market this week.

Using the alias John Smith, the 56-year-old man from Rustenburg was caught yesterday after police officers on patrol became suspicious because of his "erratic" behaviour.

After questioning the man, the officers in the city of Torhout took him to the police station.

Fingerprinting him, they discovered that he was wanted by the South African police on an Interpol red notice.

A Belgian prosecutor, Fien Maddens, said last night that the man, whose name is known to The Times, was wanted for a series of sex crimes which were allegedly committed in South Africa.

"He has been arrested. We are awaiting the documents from the South African authorities necessary to begin his extradition."

An Interpol officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the suspect was wanted for two cases of indecent assault and one of rape in Rustenburg.
