BREAD-LOVER: Oprah Winfrey on stage during a tour of Sydney

A tweet by Oprah Winfrey, in which she claims to have lost almost 12kg by following a Weight Watchers' healthy-eating programme - while still eating bread every day - has seen the diet company's US share prices skyrocket by 20%.

Before the 66-character tweet, which included the hashtag #ComeJoinMe and a link to the Weight Watchers website, was posted on Tuesday afternoon, the company's stock was trading at $11.35 a share. It closed at $13.29 a share.

Winfrey is said to own 6.4million shares in the company, about 10% of the stock, after she became a board member in October 2015.

The recent spike in share prices equates to a $12.5-million earning for Winfrey on a single tweet, or more than $3-million an hour.

In the video advertisement that appears in the tweet, Winfrey states that she "loves bread" and that she now "just manages it".

Winfrey said: "I don't deny myself bread every day. I lost 26lbs [almost 12kg] and I eat bread every single day."

Fellow bread-lovers responded to Winfrey on Twitter, celebrating her weight loss.

Others on Twitter noted the significant monetary gains for the TV talk show star.
