South Africa's Under-19 Cricket World Cup champions started their title defence disastrously yesterday, losing by 43 runs to hosts Bangladesh. A half-century by Nazmul Hossain Shanto steered Bangladesh to 240 and their bowlers defended the total with ease, despite a century by South Africa's opening batsman Liam Smith.Smith was sedate at the start of his innings and South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals.With seamer Mohammad Saifuddin firing in pinpoint yorkers, Bangladesh's impressive assortment of spinners expertly strangled the run rate.Smith picked up the pace as he approached his 100 but his side's challenge effectively ended when he was caught brilliantly in the covers in the 45th over.Saifuddin and offspinner Mehedi took three wickets each and for South Africa, seamer Wiaan Mulder took three. South Africa's next match in Group A is against Namibia on Sunday...
