Security experts back SAPS transition

Crime and security experts have welcomed acting police head Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane's back-to- basics approach. Phahlane announced yesterday that the police's detective services, forensic services and crime intelligence would become a new division known as crime detection."The three are key when it comes to the investigation of crime. It unpacks the 2014 structure which, in our view, was overloaded and rendered us ineffective," he said.Another new unit being set up is responsible for management intervention and will be headed by a career policeman with a degree in policing practices.Johan Burger, senior crime researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, said the reconfiguration was a step in the right direction but the acting police chief "had his work cut out for him"."Leadership challenges have resulted in serious damage to the public trust in the police."If he is allowed to do what he needs to do, this will go a long way to undoing the damage," he said.Phahlane was consolidating police leadership, making sure that people with suitable skills were appointed to relevant positions, which would help the police in their fight against crime, Burger said...
