Students demand food and shelter for all at UCT

Every university student must have food to eat and a place in a residence if needed. These are the two main demands of University of Cape Town's #FeesMustFall movement during registration week, which starts in earnest today.The movement's spokesman, Kagiso Sekhoto, said they would not disrupt registration for new students. "We ... don't want to block their way."The movement had spoken to residence management at UCT and demanded that every student be given food and a temporary student residence.Once students had registered, the movement planned to engage with management on outstanding fees.UCT has put measures in place to ensure that registrations go smoothly.About 4200 first-year students are expected to register this week.While no "disruptive or violent" protests were expected, the university had put measures in place to ensure academic programmes continued without hindrance, said UCT spokesman Elijah Moholola."The university respects the students' rights to engage in peaceful and legitimate protests."To cope with high volumes there would be on-campus and online registration processes...
