Long, snaking queues and all-night camp-outs have been bypassed by the creation of Idols Online for singing hopefuls who aren't quite ready to take the plunge on Idols SA. The brainchild of digital strategist Zimasa "Mooshtafa" Lupuwana and his team at MooshDigital, Idols Online is modelled on the official show. The online mock talent show takes place on Twitter and is armed with its own version of real-life judges Randall Abrams, Unathi Msengana and Somizi Mhlongo, in the form of accounts with the usernames @NOT_Randall, @NOT_Somizi and @NOT_Unathi.Gareth Cliff is not there as Idols Online kicked off when he was still in his legal battle with M-Net.Contestants are required to upload a 15-second video of themselves singing with the accompanying hashtag #IdolsOnline onto the networking site, on which they are judged and told if they made the cut or not.A cash prize of R1,000 is up for grabs for the winner and R500 for the runner-up.Winners of Idols Online aren't necessarily the ones who can sing, but rather those who garner the most traction on the site, said Lupuwana. The scathing tongue of real-life judge Randall Abrams, head judge online @NOT_Randall, has told many an aspiring muso that they do not have what it takes."You sing like you're eating undercooked basmati rice. No. #IdolsOnline," said the leader of the pack to @Thobeofheart after his rendition of Brown Sugar.Idols Online is not linked to Idols SA in any way...
