Fire all Zuma's lieutenants

05 February 2016 - 02:59 By Mzukisi Gaba, Cape Town

Two years after denying liability for splurging millions in taxpayers' money on his private KwaZulu-Natal homestead, Zuma said late on Tuesday that he had written to the Constitutional Court proposing to repay some of the money, in line with recommendations by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela (The Times, February 4). The latest machination on the Nkandla saga reveals the root of the problem.Organs of state cannot circumvent the constitution. The momentum of the Nkandla saga is unstoppable because clarity on the powers of independent Chapter 9 institutions, such as the office of the public protector, is at stake. The honourable route if the ANC is to salvage a modicum of self-respect, is to fire Zuma's lieutenants in the executive, legislature and administration for gross dereliction of duty.Henceforth charlatans of all stripes must know that a revolutionary cadre's obligation is to defend the good name of the organisation and not to ruin it by appeasing an individual leader. ..
