Meet fashion stylist Maisha, model Malina, fashion designer Mala B, and interior decorator Mhina. They are the plastic creations of international model and doll collector Mala Bryan, whose search for black or brown dolls with ethnic hair gave birth to the Malaville doll collection.Bryan, who has created than 60 dolls, launched her range, intended for black girls, in Cape Town last week.It has attracted demand from the US already.Sporting African- and Caribbean- inspired outfits, the dolls all have jobs in the creative arts."I wanted them to have careers in the creative field. Most dolls out there have conventional careers, such as being doctors, nurses or vets."I did it because I think it's great for children to feel good about wanting to be creative."Lots of children use their dolls to enter the world of make-believe and this is a way of helping them."My inspiration for creating Malaville came to me because, as a doll collector, I found it very hard to find black dolls with ethnic hair to add to my collection."I realised that I was not the only one with that problem because other adult collectors and parents wanted to add diversity to their doll collection." I started this collection with four brown-skinned dolls," she said." I know dolls have a psychological effect on children."This generation is more aware of skin tone. I want kids to look at their dolls and be able to relate to them."..
