Litmus test for Bulls and Lions ahead of Super Rugby start

12 February 2016 - 03:04 By Chumani Bambani

You would be excused for thinking the Super rugby season has begun two weeks early, given the strength of the two starting lineups for the warm-up clash between the Bulls and Lions in Polokwane. The Lions were barely tested last week when they mauled the Valke 62-17 before ravaging the Leopards - in one day - in back-to-back games on Saturday. The Bulls, on the other hand, were beaten 28-10 by the Cheetahs in a friendly clash in Harare. For both teams it was an opportunity for younger, inexperienced players. But it will be a different kettle of fish on tomorrow (Saturday) as both coaches have selected their strongest sides for the clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium at 5pm.It is expected that the two will produce some of the most enterprising rugby this season - given the Lions' performances in the last two seasons and the Bulls' explosiveness in the Currie Cup last year. The clash between the two Gauteng rivals will prove to be a great litmus test for both sides for the real business of Super rugby, which begins in a fortnight. The forward packs will hope to iron out any creases in the set pieces, while the backlines will set up an entertaining contest. While Nollis Marais will enjoy a strong midfield, the Bulls coach will play around with his fairly new back three, who are yet to be tested in Super rugby. He will start with the young and fiery Warrick Gelant at fullback, with Bjorn Basson providing experience on the wing alongside Travis Ismaiel. In the second half the coach is likely to see what Basson can do at fullback - where he featured regularly in the Japanese Top League recently - with Jamba Ulengo filling in as wing back-up."At the moment I'm not too keen to move Jesse Kriel to No15. When he played for me at Under-21 I played him at No13 and he became a Springbok there."Bjorn played at fullback in Japan, so he becomes an option. We can bring in Jamba at No11."We are probably going to play the last 20 minutes or so that way on Saturday," he said.BULLS: Warrick Gelant, Travis Ismaiel, Jesse Kriel, Jan Serfontein, Bjorn Basson, Francois Brummer, Rudy Paige, Arno Botha, Hanro Liebenberg, Nic de Jager, Grant Hattingh, RG Snyman, Marcel van der Merwe, Adriaan Strauss, Trevor Nyakane.Replacements: Jaco Visagie, Lizo Gqoboka, Jason Jenkins, Jannes Kirsten, Piet van Zyl, Tian Schoeman, Burger Odendaal, Werner Kruger, Jamba Ulengo, Pierre Schoeman, Jade Stighling.LIONS: Andries Coetzee, Ruan Combrinck, Lionel Mapoe, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Courtnall Skosan, Elton Jantjies, Ross Cronje, Warren Whiteley, Warwick Tecklenberg, Jaco Kriel, Franco Mostert, Andries Ferreira, Julian Redelinghuys, Robbie Coetzee, Jacques van Rooyen.Replacements: Malcolm Marx, Dylan Smith, Ruan Dreyer, Robert Kruger, Martin Muller, Ruan Ackermann, Stephan de Witt, Ruan Lerm, Faf de Klerk, Howard Mnisi, Stokkies Hanekom, Anthony Volmink, Jaco van der Walt...
