As actor and film producer Rapulana Seiphemo undergoes treatment at Milpark Hospital after being involved in a car crash, police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

The 48-year-old actor, who plays Tau Mogale on Generations: The Legacy, was involved in an accident on Sunday night that left two people dead and two others, including Seiphemo, critically injured.

Two people escaped with moderate injuries. They are also being treated in hospital.

Police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said two people had died in the crash and a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

According to ER24 paramedics, Seiphemo was in a critical condition after being airlifted to the Milpark's trauma unit.

The crash, which involved two vehicles that collided on the N14 near the R55 towards Krugersdorp, occurred between 10.30pm and 11.30pm.

Mduduzi Skhakhane, Seiphemo's brother-in-law, said the actor was in a stable condition.

"He's in the hands of the doctors and we are now waiting on them.

"It's a difficult time for us."

According to a statement on ER24's website, paramedics "found one vehicle in the middle of the isle of the road and the other among the bushes on the side of the road".

It is believed that there were three people in each vehicle.

The actor last made headlines when tabloid papers reported that he had lost his cool in a Johannesburg restaurant.

Seiphemo was reported to have slapped a fan who wanted to take a selfie with him.

The award-winning actor is best known as the on-screen husband of Karabo Moroka in Generations.

He also acted in and produced the 2008 feature film Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema, and starred in White Wedding and Tsotsi.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said he did not know what would happen to Seiphemo's character in the popular soap opera.

"[The team] will have to meet to discuss what will happen. It's too early to tell. We woke up to this news and are shocked."
