Pirates score key victory over Aces

22 February 2016 - 02:10 By Tshepang Mailwane

For a while at Mbombela Stadium yesterday it looked as though the supporters behind the Orlando Pirates bench were waiting for the final whistle to have a go at coach Eric Tinkler. But substitute Tendai Ndoro saved the day with a brace in the last 20 minutes to give the Bucs a deserved 3-1 win against Mpuma-langa Black Aces .There were huge celebrations and Tinkler was off the hook, for at least another week.Unlike some players who do not celebrate against their former teams to show respect, Ndoro was over the moon.It will be difficult for Tinkler to ignore him, especially as his other two strikers, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Lehlohonolo Majoro, are so poor in front of goal right now.Pirates came into the game knowing they not only needed to win, but to entertain the fans after an awful display in the 1-0 defeat to Free State Stars last week. The visitors established an early foothold and sent the crowd into raptures with a goal as early as the fifth minute.Luvuyo Memela was eager to prove himself as he delivered a cross for Thabo Rakhale. It lasted only seven minutes and it was Collins Mbesuma who came back to haunt his former side with a goal.Cape Town striker Prince Nxumalo is breathing heavily down Mbesuma's neck with 10 goals this season, so the Aces' forward would have been eager to get back onto the score sheet. But it was not to be.Pirates had numerous opportunities to go into the break with a lead.Midfielder Gift Motupa had four shots on goals in the first period, but none on target.Ndoro, however, struck in the 70th minute and again three minutes from time to seal all three points. A big win for Tinkler. In other PSL games yesterday, Pogiso Sonoka's goal helped Maritzburg United beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.Jomo Cosmos were beaten in an eighth successive away game, 1-0 by Platinum Stars at Moruleng Stadium - thanks to the only goal from Mduduzi Nyanda.
