Maties, SA Rugby Union chief to face off in court

25 February 2016 - 02:46 By Craig Ray

The University of Stellenbosch will oppose an application to provide essential information to beleaguered SA Rugby Union chief executive Jurie Roux in the Cape Town High Court today. In June last year the university filed a R37-million lawsuit against Roux for alleged financial mismanagement when he was president of the Maties Rugby Club from 2002 to 2010.According to Roux's lawyer, Frikkie Erasmus, they requested supporting documentation after the issuing of a summons by the university last June.None has been forthcoming.Roux is being sued after auditing firm KPMG was contracted by the university to undertake a forensic audit of the Maties Rugby Club's financial dealings. The audit was completed in late 2013.The KPMG report found that, between 2002 and 2012, about R21-million was irregularly transferred from the university's reserve funds to the rugby club. A further R14-million was irregularly spent on various expenses."It's strange that they had the report for so long before issuing [a] summons," Erasmus said. The delays in the legal process are frustrating Roux who, according to Erasmus, is anxious to clear his name."Last Friday we brought an application against the university to force them to provide the documentation we requested in December," Erasmus said."We suspect that they are delaying in the hope they will get rid of Jurie before this case will ever be heard. They will then withdraw the action and it will die a quiet death."University of Stellenbosch lawyers could not be reached for comment...
