Afrikaans must go, says EFF in Gauteng

The EFF in Gauteng has vowed to mobilise the province's citizens - and all branches - to fight alongside black students for their right to learn in a language of their choosing."We stand resolutely behind the University of Pretoria's EFF Students Command as they continue to protest against the dominance of Afrikaans."The command and other organisations have demanded Afrikaans be scrapped as a medium of instruction. They want UP to adopt English as the only medium of instruction."The EFF cannot allow the continued bias towards the Afrikaans language at the expense of mother-tongue languages that are not only indigenous but also official languages in South Africa," said Ntobeng Ntobeng, the EFF's provincial spokesman.He said there had been ongoing victimisation and isolation of command members at UP, with some being suspended and threatened with expulsion. Ntobeng said as fighters they were willing to put their bodies on the line."We are not afraid to die, we are not afraid to face our enemies. We are prepared to die for the struggle towards the total emancipation of our children and black, particularly African, citizens," he said.The ANC in Gauteng - with its alliance partners - shared a stage with AfriForum on Sunday, condemning the violence at universities. The EFF condemned the meeting and accused the ANC of being "hellbent on continuing a trend of securing the comforts for white people at the expense of our people".Trade union Solidarity visited UP yesterday to see if it was safe for its members to work. EFF protesters had threatened to make the campus ungovernable until their demands were met...
