Mine rescue called off

The search for the three workers trapped underground for over a month at the Lily mine, near Barberton, Mpumalanga, has been dealt another blow with the operation again being suspended because of safety concerns.Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyirenda were in a lamp room at the mine when a shaft collapsed on February 5. Seventy other miners were rescued hours after the collapse.Lily spokesman Coetzee Zietsman said it was not safe to continue the search.Gabriel Nkosi, of the Association of Mine Workers and Construction Union, said: "I went underground on Thursday and pillars have cracked. The whole area is unsafe."..
