Winter is coming in April this year with the premiere of season 6 of Game of Thrones hitting US screens on April 24.

South Africans with DStv can catch it from the US on Monday, April 25 at 3am and at 9pm on M-Net Edge channel 102, on Thursday, April 28.

The release of the trailer on Tuesday arrived nearly a year after its season 5 cliffhanger finale, which saw character Jon Snow - played by English actor Kit Harrington - being stabbed numerous times, with each attacker saying "for the watch" with every thrust.

The trailer opens with a seemingly dead Snow lying in a pool of blood and the voice of Ser Davos heard saying: "He's gone".

Speculation has been rife as to whether Snow is really dead.

James Vincent McMorrow's Wicked Game serves as bed music to the preview, which shows the raw and gratuitous sex and violence scenes that are characteristic of the show will continue to be the order of the day.

Since its release the trailer has already had more than 7.2 million views on YouTube.
