Ratepayers in Durban forked out more than R4-million to fill the bellies of politicians and officials in the past two years.

This was revealed yesterday by eThekwini municipality speaker Logie Naidoo, in response to written questions by DA councillor Sharon Chetty.

Speaking at the municipality's council meeting, Naidoo said that R2.51-million was spent on catering in the 2013/14 financial year, and R2.17-million for the 2014/15 year.

For monthly full council meetings - which take place at least 12 times a year and feature all 205 of the city's councillors - the municipality spent R1.26-million in 2013/14 and just shy of R1.2-million for the subsequent year.

Assuming 24 meetings over the two years, and that each councillor attended, about R12000 was spent per head.

Naidoo also revealed that food and drink for portfolio meetings, executive committee meetings and meetings of outside bodies cost R1.91-million over the two years.
