Like my voice, not looks

Sharing a stage with Beyoncé and Ne-Yo doesn't guarantee fame - just ask Nigerian singer Seyi Shay.Despite signing with international recording company Island Records UK, when Seyi Shay takes to the stage she's often not recognised. That is until she performs her better-known songs from her latest album.In an attempt to change that she has embarked on an African tour, having already ticked off Tanzania and Ghana.Her third stop has been South Africa, where she has already performed in Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.On her experience touring Africa, she said: "Once you know you can bring people together with your music it gives you hope and it gives you strength and the belief system that you're doing the right thing."The 30-year-old London-born Nigerian singer started her career as a teenager. Her break came when she joinedgirl band From Above in 2008, then managed by Matthew Knowles, father of Beyoncé Knowles.The group performed with Beyoncé on her I AM tour.Last year Seyi Shay collaborated with US singer Ne-Yo at the MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban.With increased time in the spotlight comes increased pressure. The challenge for Seyi Shay (Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua) is balancing the pressure to "always look good" with the stereotypes that follow."Being a girl, a lot of people don't take you seriously because they think that you're more concerned with your looks than the actual music," she said.The next stops in her African tour, promoting her latest album Seyi or Shay, are Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe. This week she will collaborate in the studio with SA artists including Bucie and Cassper Nyovest...
