A Johannesburg celebrity chef has made an appeal to parents to be more vigilant with their children's electronic devices after she discovered her daughter was the victim of a cyber sexual predator. The woman, who may not be identified because her daughter is minor, revealed that a man known to her family had requested photos from her 15-year-old daughter and encouraged her to do unacceptable things. In a video message on Facebook she said: "My profile made my family a softer target, with the perpetrator assuming I would be ashamed and keep silent. I will not be ashamed nor will I be silent!"My daughter has been a victim of a cyber attack. A person known to my family has created various social media platforms to communicate with her. He has requested photographs and encouraged her to do things no adults should encourage a child to do. I am asking parents out there who have children with iPads and cellphones to be vigilant," said the woman, who is a television presenter and author. She said it was harrowing."People our kids trust are the ones that can damage them. I have hired a legal team and a private investigator, but what happens to others who don't have such resources. Kids have iPads as a high-school requirement, but having an iPad comes with a lot of dangers."She said she had received an overwhelming response.A user commented: "As parents, we must be vigilant and one step ahead. The proliferation of social media and one's harmless albeit sometimes innocent on-line presence presents loopholes for being targets by deviants who must be exposed."..
