How to transform the Boks

10 May 2016 - 09:17 By Rob Haswell, Pietermaritzburg

Transformation of the Springbok squad is not only non-negotiable, it is readily achievable right now. There is no reason why the Bok squad to play against Ireland next month cannot be substantially transformed. All it takes is an unequivocal commitment from new coach Allister Coetzee to a more exciting and skilful game-plan which places a premium on pace, passing and stepping, rather than size, bulk and brawn. With this new game plan Coetzee would be able to select the following squad: among the tight forwards, Trevor Nyakane, Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira, Scarra Ntubeni, Siya Kolisi and Oupa Mohoje, along with Akkers van der Merwe, Eben Etsebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jaco Kriel, and the Du Preez twins; among the backs, Rudy Page, Elton Jantjies, Juan de Jongh, Lionel Mapoe, Seabelo Senatla and Cheslin Kolbe fit the bill, not overlooking Jessie Kriel and Pat Lambie.Such a squad reflects that in order to secure enough possession, big forwards, many of whom are white, would not be excluded, and that our country has an abundance of talented backs from all communities.Such a squad would be selected primarily on merit and also indicates that we can field an integrated Springbok team tomorrow, and not just in 10 years' time.Furthermore, by adopting this new game plan, the Boks would attract widespread support from all our communities. ..
