It's déjà vu for Bucs, SuperSport in cup final

16 May 2016 - 09:25 By NICK SAID

No two teams have met in more cup matches than this year's Nedbank Cup finalists Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United, with seven clashes in the three seasons before this one.History favours Pirates as the two sides prepare for the final at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on May 28, but SuperSport can point to recent successes. On Saturday Pirates beat Free State Stars 4-2, while SuperSport eliminated Baroka FC 2-0 in the other semifinal. It will be the first time the sides have met in a cup final.Recent clashes include meeting in all three knockout competitions in the 2014-15 campaign. SuperSport came out tops with two victories.Striker Jeremy Brockie scored a wonder goal to send Pirates tumbling out at the last-16 stage in what was SuperSport's first outright victory over the Soweto giants in the Nedbank Cup. They had a 6-5 penalty victory in 1999 after the teams were goalless. The Buccaneers won 5-4 on penalties in the 1997 cup and, a year later, 3-0. Pirates also won 2-0 in the 2008 competition. In 18 cup meetings, SuperSport have claimed just four wins. Pirates won nine, with five matches drawn.SuperSport also knocked Pirates out of the Telkom Knockout last season with a 2-0 victory, but the Bucs won 2-1 in their MTN8 quarterfinal. The two sides have met once in the league this season, when Michael Boxall scored in a 1-0 win for SuperSport. The Saturday clash is crucial because both sides aspire to finish in the top eight. After Saturday's victory, Pirates coach Eric Tinkler said: "We've got to secure our place in the top eight. We can't just think about the final."He said Bucs' strategy was to press the awkward, hard-running Stars high."I told the players that [Stars] haven't really been pressed. When I watched their games, teams sat back and allowed them to build up. And we needed to go at them from the first whistle. I felt we did that and created chances. We deserved that 2-0 lead."After the break Stars changed to a 3-5-2 formation, something we had actually planned for. Unfortunately the players struggled to switch to it, and to mark," Tinkler said.Baroka coach Kgoloko Thobejane said defeats against SuperSport on Saturday and African Warriors in the National First Division last Wednesday had not dampened the mood in the camp.Instead, they are preparing for a huge party in Polokwane on Saturday, the day they expect to clinch promotion to the top flight next season. They host Cape side Milano United at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium."Our campaign to see ourselves in the PSL is still on. Come May 22, we are sure we will collect maximum points to seal our place." - Additional reporting by Marc Strydom and Tshepang Mailwane..
