Power, water, rates hiked

Mayoral committee member for finance Geoffrey Makhubo announced an increase in Johannesburg rates yesterday. He said electricity tariffs would increase by 6.93% and waste removal services by 7.5%. Property rates will increase by 5.9%; water and sewerage and sanitation services by 13.2%.The new tariffs will take effect on July 1.The City of Johannesburg has a budget of R54.8-billion for the 2016-2017 financial year, of which R45.3-billion was earmarked for operating expenditure and R9.5-billion for capital expenditure.Makhubo promised to address unemployment and service delivery challenges.The Johannesburg Roads Agency - which spends roughly R380000 a month fixing vandalised traffic lights - received a three-year capital budget of R3.5-billion.In the past five years the agency has spent more than R2-billion on capital projects with spending increasing by 52% a year on average...
