The ANC’s national list committee has ordered a rerun of a North West regional conference after it was marred by violence.

The committee found that “in the absence of any evidence to the contrary”, candidate selection guidelines had been ignored or manipulated to achieve a predetermined outcome at the regional conference.

At the conference cars were stoned and people beaten up in a dispute over the registration of certain delegates.

The delegates were vying for the opportunity to serve as ANC councillors after the August 3 local government elections.

The national list committee expressed grave concern that “the ANC will be brought into disrepute if it is seen or perceived to be endorsing such behaviour”.

In a letter dated May 23, national committee convenor Fikile Xasa instructed that the conference be restaged by today.

The provincial list committee was also instructed to convene fresh branch general meetings. These meetings should have been convened by yesterday.

Xasa wrote: “We urge you to accept this decision in a comradely spirit and to devote your energies to ensure an overwhelming ANC victory in the upcoming elections.”
